    What is Google PageRank and is PR Important?

    The PageRank of a given webpage gives a clue of its value within the search engine index. PageRank is a sort of algorithm that evaluates the link structure of a hyper-linked set of web pages and then goes ahead to allot a numerical credence to each web page for purposes of measuring a page’s relative importance within the given set. The scale is normally a range between 0 and 10. A web page with a high PageRank has a positive direct impact on its position within Google’s search results. Be advised though that even though it is not the only factor Google algorithm considers when ranking a page, as it is one among circa 200 other factors, it is an important factor that cannot be ignored.

    Keep in mind that Google looks at more than just the volume of links of votes that a given page receives; it also evaluates the relevance of the page casting the vote. If a vote is cast by a page that in itself is ‘important’, the effect will weigh heavily on the page being voted for as it will also become ‘important’.

    Once a website starts to increase in popularity through the quantity and quality of back links, that page’s PageRank will subsequently increase also. Keep in mind though that the increase in number is based on a logarithmic scale. Maintaining that valuable PageRank can prove to be very tricky and most of it has to do with your site’s internal linking structure. PageRank sculpting is very common, although there are methods in the market that reduce it. PageRank sculpting is whereby an important page leaks its ‘link juice’ into a less important webpage which is less likely to appear in any search results.

    The other common way of leaking ‘link juice’ is whereby you give out large volumes of external links without getting similar amount of links to your site. During the link building process, you should be very cautious and check the possible value of a link from a given site before your site leaks ‘link juice’ to that site through a reciprocal link.

    With that said, even though PageRank is an important component in the ranking algorithm of Google, because of its logarithmic nature, it is very hard to get a high PageRank even after many years of link building. Typically, the web is subject to change and the web page that a link comes from may not have as much weight as it did initially when the link was first obtained, in spite of the PageRank measure for that particular page. The reason for this may be because the other pages that were casting ‘votes’ for that particular page have significantly reduced in value and don’t carry significant weight as they once did thus indirectly affecting the link going to your site.

    Google therefore recommends that the PageRank evaluation of a web page be calculated regularly even though the PageRank Scale available on the Google Toolbar is only updated twice or thrice a year. Therefore, your best bet for your website to gain rankings is to continuously build credible back links and not to give up when the PageRank scale doesn’t rocket overnight.
